BURMILLA
The overall impression of the Burmilla is a medium foreign type –
similar to the Foreign Burmese, but non-Burmese in coat, pattern and
length. The Burmilla bears the same relationship to Foreign Burmese as
the Oriental to the Siamese. Siamese head type or cobbiness of the
British Shorthair is regarded as a fault.
I – BODY/CONFORMATION (25)
(10) BODY – Medium in length and thickness with firm muscles. Straight
back from shoulder to rump. Chest is generous but not
disproportionately broad.
(10) LEGS & FEET – Medium in length with hind legs slightly longer
than front. Paws oval in shape.
(5) TAIL – Medium to long. Medium in thickness and tapering slightly to
a rounded tip.
II – HEAD TYPE (25)
(15) FULL FACE – Wide at jaw hinge with good width between ears.
Gently rounded top head. Short wedge and in profile, a noticeable but
gentle nose break is apparent.
Firm chin.
(5) EARS – Medium to large with rounded tips and set well apart,
continuing angle of upper face to produce a butterfly-wing outline from
front. In profile, slight forward tilt. Ear tufts are acceptable in
both short and long hairs.
(5) EYES– Slightly oriental in shape but neither almond nor round. Set
well apart. Large and expressive.
III – COAT TEXTURE/LENGTH (20)
SHORTHAIR – Short, fine and close lying with a slight“lift”. Slight ear
tufts are acceptable.
LONGHAIR – Silky and fine in texture. Longer on tail and noticeable
ruff. Furnishings inside ears to form “streamers” and tufts at tips of
ears are acceptable.
IV – COLOUR (30)
See Coat Colour Description for more details. For cats without pattern,
allow 20 points for colour.
(10) COLOUR
(10) PATTERN the full

Explanation of
ALLOWED ANCESTRY:
Traditional Chinchilla Persian
(used only once as the foundation breeding of a new line and not to be
repeated in that line).
Traditional and/or Foreign
Burmese to ensure Burmese type and temperament .
Burmillas of all colours,
patterns and coat lengths as described above.
This breeding program is specific
in the first 4 generations and should be adhered to as follows:
Step 1:
Burmese x Chinchilla
This gives 1st generation, (gen.
1), Burmillas. This gives Shaded or
Tipped varieties or occasionally Ticked Tabbies if the Chinchilla
carries
Golden.
Step 2:
1st gen. Burmilla back again to
Burmese This gives 2nd generation, (gen.2), Burmillas. At this
stage you can expect to get Tabbies, Selfs and
Smokes as well as Shaded or Tipped varieties.
Step 3:
2nd generation Burmilla to an
unrelated Burmilla (any variety)
This gives 3rd generation, (gen
3), Burmillas. Again any variety is possible, including
longhaired Burmillas, (Tiffanies), if the 2nd gen. cats both carry the
longhair gene.
Step 4:
3rd generation Burmilla should be
mated back to Burmese
This gives the 4th generation,
(gen.4), Burmillas.
After that, matings should mainly
be Burmilla to Burmilla.
There is a need to provide some flexibility is this in order to
accomodate heterozygous Chinchilla Persians. The objective remains the
same, Burmese type with some imported genetics from the Chinchilla. A
full Burmilla should show at least 3 breedings to the Burmese in it's
ancestry.

comment spring 2009 Summary of: Meeting at All About Pets, various emails and phone calls Jean, Ann, Elaine, Beth, Ivan, Josee, Johanne, Kim Black according to Elaine ebony is considered the darker colour so I stand corrected. The comments jet black to be removed. Patched Elaine has asked that we go with patched and (tortoishell) in brackets as this is standard with the CCA and the judges understanding. This may become redundant if we take out the red genetics (see below) Comment The standard is too large and too complex and judges are becoming discouraged " show me the illa" Some suggestions Remove as (AOV) the following for show (ie. Not to be shown) * the solid cats * the tabbies except the ticked cats all out are classic , mackeral and spotted All shaded are ticked thus no tabby designation as in the tipped cats Increase the tipped designation ( shaded are then 75% - 10% colour * Tipping = colour @10% or silver @ 90% * Shading = colour @ 10-75% or silver @ 25-90% * Ticked Tabbies = colour @ greater than 75% & silver (could aov this group as well??) Remove the designation golden and silver Show only the silver cats (this removes the caramel question and the golden question) The smokes remain as do Shaded and Tipped Remove the red genetics (this removes the Patched/Cameo/Shell question) The Burmese and full expression colours are not differentiated thus There are only the following colours: · Black (covers Ebony term) · Brown (covers FE Brown, Sable, Champagne)** · Blue (covers Blue, Indigo)** · Platinum (covers Frost, Platinum)** ** They are fundamentally difficult to differentiate in silver based cats anyway Hi Ann and Ivan and everyone, I have a Chocolate Silver Classic Tabby girl from England and she is gorgeous, I would hate to see them go by the way side, because they haven't been seen before. The Remove as (AOV) the Following for showing (can be used for breeding, but not for Showing): The Solids (like you said) The Goldens (confusion between Ivory and White) Ticked are not Shaded, they have an extra bar of a different Colour in the hair Shaft). Should be: Tipped (Colour at end of the hair shaft) Shaded (Colour about half way down the hair shaft) Smoked (Colour about 2/3rds the way down the hair shaft) Ticked (Colour about 2/3rds the way down the hair shaft, but has an extra colour bar to split the main colour on hair shaft) Solid (Colour all the way down the hair shaft) "Show only the silver cats (this removes the caramel question and the golden question)"...No, this isn't so, I have a Caramel (Lilac based) Silver Ticked Tabby female and I have a kitten from the previous Mom (sister to the one I have), who is a Caramel (Blue based) Tortie Silver Ticked Tabby, so I still believe that you need to keep the Caramel as a Colour, even in the Silvers. I don't believe that removing the Red or Cream Gene will help, the reason being, is most of the World is Breeding these colours in the Asians and Burmillas, the only Country who isn't currently breeding these colours (and that could change soon) is Australia. Do you know how hard it will be to only use cats who are from the 4 Colours and to produce kittens or cats that don't have the Red or Cream Gene will also be hard. I think you would be shooting yourself in the foot if you do this. I like those Torties and I love showing them. Sincerely, Kim |

BURMILLA NOTES: The Burmese colour restriction gene [cbcb] has the effect of reducing the melanin in the hair shaft particularly close to the skin, thus the colour may not be sound to the root, and the cat may have a denser concentration of pigment on the mask and ears. Eye colour. There is a the connection between the melanin production, as regulated by the various recessive mutations of the full colour (C) gene and the colour deposited on the iris of the eye. Copper (eye) is the unrestricted/darkest form and varies through burmese sepia-- cb/cb - - - gold eyes and Siamese sepia -- cs/cs--- blue eyes. The blue eye is the result of a lack on colour deposition on the front half only of the iris in both cats and humans. The silver/inhibitor [I] gene is responsible for producing a "shredded or weakened phaeomelanin" and thus green eyes. |

dilute, homozygous red in females and red in males.] remove highlighted text as incorrect.. the powder coat cats seen in all dilute's (see comments on DM) and is in reality in our view, the result of the non agouti cat being silver [I/-] versus golden [ii] in its background This is the first of the red sexlinked colour overrides That is the normal colour manufacture eumalanin is repaced with phaomaelanin. The cat is non agouti, but given the biochemestry it can be extremely difficult to distinguish from an agouti cat. The sepia genetics is easly distinguished but is not differentiated at this time. It may have been that this differentiation was the objective of the poorly chosen Apricot colour designation. |

"colour" it is a
compination of two genetic characteristics black and burmese sepia, to
produce sable, as are the following examples of well recognized
combinations: Indigo - -black and dilute Blue - - black, sepia, and dilute There are only two recognized colours - black and brown and in fact it may well be that there is only one colour and the variation in what is seen is due to colour dot shape. genetics [ non agout, Black, burmese sepia, not dilute, not orange and not normally noted] |

SMOKE
[ as above plus Wb/- , swb/swb and I/- or ii] The Burmilla Smoke is a non-agouti cat as are all solid cats above and varies from the solid cats only in one aspect - that it displays the wide band genetics . All colours defined in the solid section above, are available. The cat is defined by colour and followed by the term SMOKE. Some faint ghost marking may be evident on the body especially in kittens, but is undesirable in adults. There may be silver frown marks on the forehead and silver rings round the eyes, sometimes know as "Clown" markings. Our current understanding is as follows; The Agouti (ticked) cat is distinguishable by the brick nose, the non agouti cats have nose colour that matches paw pad colour. Thus any cat that has a brick nose can not be defined or shown as a SMOKE. The only exception is the genetic Orange (red cream) cat as the brick nose colour is largely non-distinguishable from the red nose. Wide banding is made up of two genes one dominant and one recessive, that work in both agouti and not agouti cats to vary the amount of colour [B/-] depositied on the hair shaft. There are a number of factors that affect this colour deposition. Black[B/-] is the "strongest"colour. Its' deposition on the hair shaft is reduced in its' recessive form [bb] (shape of colour dot) , by the sepia genetics [cbcb] (temperature sensitivity), the dilution genetics [dd] (dot deposition pattern/clustering) and by the affect of the "silver inhibitor' gene [I/-] as against golden [ii] and whether the cat's normal colour production is amended by the sex linked orange overide (eumelanin vs phaeomelanin, the latter being more sensative to [I/-]). Thus there can be both golden smokes and a silver smokes As a result the ground colour can be white [I/-] or pale cream [ii] and the hair shaft will have a varying percentage of colour pigmentation dependant upon whether one or both wideband genes are present and the accumulation of recessives mentioned above. The ideal SMOKE has usually been seen as clearly silver on the undercoat and having 50% of colour. This should no longer be the case. It is not intended that golden smokes and silver smokes be differentiated at this time. But judges and breeders should be aware of the possibilities and recogize that the smoking base colour and amount can be highly variable. The cat should clearly be a "smoke". The golden smoke will additionally deliver a perceivable darker hue to the main colour particularly in the (weeker) colours rendering the Blue cat to (caramel), Lilac to (taupe) and Cream to (apricot). These darker coats and conversely the "powder coats" (silver cats) are also not differentiated at this time. NOTE: The orange based cats (Red and Cream and Tortie smokes) will not show much if any colouration due to the increased sensitivity of phaeomelanin (orange genetics ) to silver [I/-]. Thus a sable tortie smoke may appear very uneven in colour with almost no red in sight, and a red or cream smoke may be almost all silver and appear Tipped. In fact it can often be impossible to differentiate a red tipped from a red smoke and may not be determined until subsequent breeding. While this would be of concern to the breeder it should not affect the judging process. |

TABBY
PATTERNS (agouti, narrow band cats) [ A/- , I/- or i/i , -- , O/- or o/o, plus wb/wb, Swb/- , Ta/-, if not then, Mc/- and Sp/- and the recessive of each ] OVERVIEW The tabby pattern is formed by markings of the solid pattern of colour on a background of agouti hairs. The pattern colour in standard tabbies should be that of the equivalent colour Burmilla solids and torties and their Burmese colour restriction counterparts. In silver tabbies the pattern colour may lack warmth (I.e., red or cream) and should not be penalized. The pattern colour in spotted, classic and mackerel tabbies should match on head, body, legs and tail. There should be no speckling of agouti hairs in the markings and the pattern. On ticked tabbies the pattern colour on head, legs and tail should match the ticking colour on the body. In golden tabbies the markings should be dense, as near as possible to the roots and in silver tabbies they should extend well down the hairshaft. The markings should show good contrast with the ground colour, but in dilute colours the contrast between the markings and the ground colour is less than the required in non-dilute colours. In tortoishell tabbies the distribution of tortie markings is immaterial. TICKED TABBY [as above Plus Ta/-] The body hair is to be ticked with two or three bands of colour with shades of the marking colour and ground colour. The pattern should be free of spots, stripes or blotches (except for darker dorsal shading). Lighter undersides may show buttons on chest and stomach. The face and tail must show distinct tabby markings. Legs may or may not be barred. Any necklaces may be broken or unbroken. OBJECTIONS: Blurred or indistinct markings. Light tip on end of tail (except in red, cream, apricot - where a light tip is permitted). Ticking in dark markings. White that extends to the throat. Tamishing or discolouration in Silver tabbies NOTE: The orange based silver cats (Red , Cream and Torties) will show reduced colouration due to the increased sensitivity of phaeomelanin (orange genetics) to silver [I/-]. Thus a silver tortie may appear very uneven in colour with almost no red in sight, and a red or cream may be almost shaded. Conversely, it can often be impossible to differentiate a red ticked golden from a red solid and may not be determined until subsequent breeding. While this would be of concern to the breeder it should not affect the judging process. NOTE: Indications of a mask or colour [C/- versus cbcb] not sound to the root (colour pointing /sepia) is not differentiated at this time and could be confused with silver versus golden[I/- versus ii]. MACKEREL TABBY [as above but tata, Mc/-, spsp] The body pattern conforms to the same specifications as the Classic Tabby except the design of the markings - instead of swirls or Circles, has vertical bands of darker colour markings on the cat's sides. This 'butterfly' is delineated by thin lines instead of solid colouring. This pattern can have three distinct spinal lines but they are narrow and usually meld into each other. Good contrast must exist between the ground colour and pattern. Necklaces will be broken, the more the better. OBJECTIONS: Blurred or indistinct markings. Light tip on end of tail (except in red, cream, apricot-where a light tip is permitted). Ticking in dark markings. White that extends to the throat. Tarnishing or discolouration in Silver tabbies CLASSIC TABBY [as above plus - - tata, mcmc, spsp] The markings are dense, clearly defined and broad. Legs barred with bracelets. Tail markings can range from complete or broken rings to a continuation of the darker colour of the spine line and ends with a dark tip (except in red, cream, apricot-where a light tip is permitted.). Necklaces will be broken, the more the better. Frown marks on forehead should form a letter 'M'. The line runs back from outer comer of eye to form 'spectacles'. There are swirls on the cheeks. Vertical lines over back of the head extend to shoulder markings which end in the shape of a butterfly. Spine markings consist of a vertical line down the spine from butterfly to tail with a vertical stripe paralleling it on each side. A large oval blotch on each side is to be encircled by one or more rings. Side markings should be the same on both sides. There are vest buttons on chest and stomach. NOTE: Markings can vary considerably and still meet the standard. Such variations include the width of the spine lines; single or double 'butterfly' pattern; number of necklaces; complete circular markings of the 'bull's eye'; number of rings on tail. OBJECTIONS: Blurred or indistinct markings. Light tip on end of tail. licking in dark markings. White that extends to the throat. Tarnishing or discolouration in Silver tabbies. SPOTTED TABBY [as above plus (Sp/-] The spotted cat comes in two varieties, the spotted mackeral [Mc/-] as in the Ocicat (discontinuous vertical stripes) and the spotted classic [mcmc] as in the Bengal (rounded spots, more random pattern. Pattern conforms to the same specifications as the classic tabby pattern, except the body pattern is comprised of spots or dots rather than swirls and lines. It is not intended to differentiate at this time. Good contrast must exist between the ground colour and pattern. Spine lines may appear solid but preference is given to spots. Necklaces will be broken, the more the better. OBJECTIONS: Solid Mackerel markings or spots that run together. Blurred or indistinct markings. Light tip on end of tail (except in red, cream, apricot - where a light tip is permitted). Ticking in dark markings. White that extends to the throat. Tarnishing or discolouration in Silver tabbies NOTE: A 'marble' pattern is seen in heterozygous spotted classic cats [mcmc, Spsp]. TORTOISHELL (Patched) TABBY [Females only that are as above with the addition of heterozygous orange [Oo]. All four tabby patterns are permitted. Distribution of tortie markings is immaterial. GOLDEN [ A/ ,

ii and WB/-] Burmillas will have shading on the face and a mantel of colour shading down from the spine to a lighter shade on the chest, stomach and under the tail. A shaded cat is an agouti cat in which between 25 and 75 % on the hair shaft is not marked and shows only the golden or silver. As the silver/inhibitor [I/-] gene has such a strong colour reducing capability shaded golden cats are usually and the lower end of the 25/75 spectrum. This variety has all the same colour and pattern classes as the ticked cat above with the shaded term added. Because of the reduced pattern definition some varieties become more difficult to define. Again as the silver/inhibitor [I/-] gene has such a strong colour reducing capability on the red/cream genetics (phaeomelanin cats) most of the shaded silver cats will appear almost tipped and pattern identification will be almost impossible. While this is for the breeder to know it should not affect the judging decisions. |

(agouti, wide band cats) classification includes the tipped cats not differentiated [ A/ , - I/- or ii and Wb/-] excessive tipping would be seen as a fault Burmillas will have shading on the face and a mantel of colour shading down from the spine to a lighter shade on the chest, stomach and under the tail. A shaded cat is an agouti cat in which between 25 and 75 % on the hair shaft is not marked and shows only the golden or silver. As the silver/inhibitor [I/-] gene has such a strong colour reducing capability shaded golden cats are usually at the lower end of the 25/75 spectrum. TIPPED (Chinchilla) (agouti, super wide band cats) [ A/ , - I/- or ii and WB/-, swb/swb] Burmillas will have tipping on the face, with a light mantel of colour shading from the spine to the sides and tail. The pigment will only show at the extremities of the hairs . A tipped cat is an agouti cat in which more than 75 % on the hair shaft is not marked and shows only the golden or silver. As the silver/inhibitor [I/-] gene has such a strong colour reducing capability tipped golden cats are usually at the lower end of the 75% "no colour" spectrum and may not be seen as clearly tipped. Flexibility is suggested. If fact a shaded golden is probable genetically [Wb, swbswb]. |
The shaded cats have all the same colour and pattern classes as the tabby cat above with the shaded term added. Because of the reduced pattern definition some pattern varieties become more difficult to define. and be evenly distributed in the non tortoiseshell variety. Tipping so slight as to be barely discernable is undesirable except in the "red/cream variety . Again as the silver/inhibitor [I/-] gene has such a strong colour reducing capability on the red/cream genetics (phaeomelanin cats) most of these cats will have almost no colour. This variety has all the same colour and pattern classes as the ticked and shaded cat above with the "Tipped" term added. Because of the reduced pattern definition all varieties become impossible to define in the adult cat. They are therefore not differentiated for judging purposes. Colour is also often severely reduced and the ability to differentiate between the "weaker" colours may be a problem particularly in the juvenile cats. Judges and breeders should make their best determination, at the time, based on their understanding of what they see. Breeders should be aware of the possibility of surprises in the breeding of such cats. |

- I/- or
ii and WB/-, swb/swb] Burmillas will have tipping on the face, with a light mantel of colour shading from the spine to the sides and tail. The pigment will only show at the extremities of the hairs and be evenly distributed. Tipping so slight as to be barely discernable is undesirable except in the "red/cream variety . A tipped cat is an agouti cat in which more than 75 % on the hair shaft is not marked and shows only the golden or silver. As the silver/inhibitor [I/-] gene has such a strong colour reducing capability tipped golden cats are usually and the lower end of the 75% "no colour" spectrum and may not be seen as clearly tipped. Flexibility is suggested. If fact a shaded golden is probable genetically [Wb, swbswb]. This variety has all the same colour and pattern classes as the ticked and shaded cat above with the "tipped" term added. Because of the reduced pattern definition all varieties become impossible to define in the adult cat. They are therefor not differentiated for judging purposed. Colour is also often severly reduced and the ability to differentiate between the "weeker" colours may be a problem particularly in the juvenile cats. Judges and breeders should make their best determination, at the time based on their understanding of what they see. Breeders should be aware of the possibility of surprises in the breeding of such cats. Again as the silver/inhibitor [I/-] gene has such a strong colour reducing capability on the red/cream genetics (phaeomelanin cats) most of these cats will have almost no colour . |

TABBY
PATTERNS [ A/- , B/- C/-,
D/-, I/- , L/-, O/-, and
recessive of each plus
wb/wb, Swb/- , Ta/-, if not then, Mc/- and Sp/- and the
recessive of each ] OVERVIEW The tabby pattern is formed by markings of the solid pattern of colour on a background of agouti hairs. The pattern colour in standard tabbies should be that of the equivalent colour Burmilla solids and torties and their Burmese colour restriction counterparts. In silver tabbies the pattem colour may lack warmth (I.e., red or cream) and should not be penalized. The pattern colour in spotted, classic and mackerel tabbies should match on head, body, legs and tail. There should be no speckling of agouti hairs in the markings and the pattem, which consists of dark agouti on a light agouti background, If so it must be penalized. |

TICKED
TABBY [as above
Plus Ta/-. ] Body hair to be ticked with two or three bands of colour with shades of the marking colour and ground colour. The pattern should be free of spots, stripes or blotches (except for darker dorsal shading). Lighter undersides may show buttons on chest and stomach. Face and tail must show distinct tabby markings. Legs mayor may not be barred. Any necklaces may be broken or unbroken. OBJECTIONS: Blurred or indistinct markings. Light tip on end of tail (except in red, cream, apricot - where a light tip is permitted). Ticking in dark markings. White that extends to the throat. Tamishing or discolouration in Silver tabbies NOTE: The orange based silver cats (Red , Cream and Torties) will show reduced colouration due to the increased sensitivity of phaeomelanin (orange genetics ) to silver [I/-]. Thus a silver tortie may appear very uneven in colour with almost no red in sight, and a red or cream may be almost shaded. Conversly it can often be impossible to differentiate a red ticked golden from a red solid and may not be determined until subsequent breeding. While this would be of concern to the breeder it should not affect the judging process. Note; indications of a mask or colour [C/- versus cbcb] not sound to the root (colour pointing /sepia) is not differentiated at this time and could be confused with [I/- versus ii]. |

MACKEREL TABBY [as above but tata, Mc/-, spsp] Pattern conforms to the same specifications as the Classic Tabby except the design of the markings-instead of swirls or Circles, the body pattern has vertical bands of darker colour markings on the cat's sides. The 'butterfly' is delineated by thin lines instead of solid colouring. Tarnishing or discolouration n Silver tabbies |

CLASSIC
TABBY [as above
plus - - tata, mcmc,
spsp] Markings dense, clearly defined and broad. Legs barred with bracelets. Tail markings can range from complete or broken rings to a continuation of the darker colour of the spine line and ends with a dark tip (except in red, cream, apricot-where a lighttip is permitted.). Necklaces will be broken, the more the better. Frown marks on forehead should form a letter 'M'. Line runs back from outer comer of eye to form 'spectacles'. Swirls on cheeks. Vertical lines over back of head extend to shoulder markings which end in the shape of a butterfly. Spine markings consist of a vertical line down the spine from butterfly to tail with a vertical stripe paralleling it on each side. Large oval blotch on each side to be encircled by one or more rings. Side markings should be the same on both sides. Vest buttons on chest and stomach. |

TABBY [as above plus
(Sp/-] The spotted cat comes in two varieties, the spotted mackeral [Mc/-] as in the Ocicat (discontinuous vertical stripes) and the spotted classic [mcmc] as in the Bengal (rounded spots , more random pattern. The proposed CFA
standard as taken from the GCCF in England
Comments are in red
Much of what is seen here is the rational that resulted from some
very long and extensive discussion of the English standard and why so
much of it was rejected by CCA.
Colours have only one undesputed means of definition - and that is
based on genetics. Most fancies are slowly coming to that conclusion.
Anything
else causes problems.
